Report: Acura TSX earmarked for brand’s first hybrid system
Honda President and CEO Takanobu Ito revealed earlier this month that the automaker’s luxury Acura brand was moving forward with plans to bring a hybrid model to market, but stopped short of naming a specific model earmarked for the hybrid treatment.
However, thanks to an anonymous Acura dealer, we now have word on Acura’s first hybrid model. Speaking with Automotive News, the dealer revealed Acura’s entry-level TSX will be the first to receive a hybrid option.
According to the source, the TSX hybrid will surface for the 2011 model year. The TSX was originally slated to become Acura’s first U.S. diesel offering, but those plans were scrapped after U.S. certification was deemed too expensive. A V6 model now stands as the line’s top offering, but the forthcoming hybrid will likely takeover that position.
Two other Acura models are destined for the hybrid treatment, but those plans remain largely under wraps. However, Acura executives have previously noted the success of the Lexus RX 400h, indicating a hybrid version of the company’s MDX could be on the way. A hybrid version of the automaker’s TL sedan also seems likely.
